“Thank you for being a friend…” (cue the Golden Girls theme song!)
The focus for today is about friendship! I know many of you might be thinking how the heck does friendship connect to my success as an athlete?!?! The truth is, it plays a huge role!
Who do you call on when you want to share something that happened? Who’s the friend that motivates you? Which friend makes you laugh uncontrollably? Who do you reach out to when you need advice? Who can you get on board with your next crazy adventure? Which friend is your workout Buddy?
For some of us, one friend might fit the mold. For others, we might have a few friends that we connect with for various reasons.
As athletes, we are naturally social. We like the sense of community and working with others in a team environment. The sense of support and need for culture is something that athletes seek. The social dimension of our health and wellness is important. It helps relieve stress, improve self-esteem anf be connected to something bigger than ourselves.
Your support system or friend(s) might be involved in your sport….but many times they are not! Regardless, having a strong support system helps you daily and when times get tough.
