The 1st day of the Mental Reset is focusing on your “WHY”. No matter how experienced you are as an athlete, this component is critical to your performance success. Understanding your WHY also helps you balance demands from your athletic, personal and professional worlds, which is extremely important for your mental well-being.
Your WHY connects to your purpose for taking part in your sport or activity. Here are some questions for you to reflect upon to assist you in developing your WHY:
*Why is this sport/activity important to you?
*What does success mean to you?
*What sacrifices are you willing to make to take part in this sport/activity? What are you not willing to sacrifice?
*How do you define yourself as an athlete?
*What are your expectations in taking part in this sport/activity?
It’s easy to have your WHY in your head, but it is so important to write it down!
Grab a piece of paper, journal or your phone and write down your WHY. A key pointer is not to rush this process. Find a time when you feel relaxed and are ready to take part in self-reflection.
Your WHY statement is unique and should make you feel connected to your performance goals as an athlete.
Once you have a clear understanding of your WHY, you should be able to experience ease with goal setting, making training decisions and even deciding on your race calendar!
Have fun developing your WHY!
